The Big Return!
In France, ‘back to school’ is a Big Thing for kids and their parents. It is called La Rentrée in French, which literally translated means “back to school” but in French culture it means something bigger than that: it’s The Return, it’s everyone coming back after the summer holidays and getting back to routine and back to work. It is considered a significant moment on the calendar in France, and here we are! It’s today!
One of the advantages of raising teens is that they can sort their own school bag out and those crazy days (or “night before” in some cases – oops!) of labelling all the stationary and sewing name tags on to clothes, are behind us.
However, it’s not all peace and love with teens. The new school year comes with its own challenges.
Here are five top tips for parents of teens to help them navigate the back-to-school period:
- Establish a Routine: Help your teen establish a consistent daily routine that includes regular sleep patterns, set mealtimes, and dedicated study hours. Consistency and structure can help them (and you!) feel more organised and prepared for the demands of school.
- Open Communication: Maintain open lines of communication with your teen. Encourage them to share their thoughts, concerns, and goals for the upcoming school year. Actively listen to their needs and provide guidance and support when necessary.
- Set Realistic Expectations: Help your teen set realistic academic and personal goals for the school year. Encourage them to challenge themselves, but also emphasise the importance of balance and self-care. Remind them that it’s okay to make mistakes and that learning is a process.
- Encourage Time Management: Teach your teen effective time management skills. Help them create a schedule or use digital tools to prioritize tasks, set deadlines, and allocate time for studying, extracurricular activities, and relaxation. This will help them develop important skills for managing their workload and reducing stress.
- Foster a Positive Learning Environment: Create a supportive and positive learning environment at home. Ensure they have a quiet and organised space for studying, free from distractions. Encourage them to seek help from teachers or tutors when needed, and celebrate their achievements along the way.
Every teen and every family are unique, so it’s important to adapt these tips to suit your needs and circumstances. Additionally, maintaining a healthy balance between school and personal life is crucial for their overall well-being.
